Dual study or Ausbildung — choosing with your grades and patience in mind
How to weigh duales Studium against a recognised Ausbildung when both look attractive on paper, including company contracts and study load.
Families often treat duales Studium as the “higher” option and Ausbildung as a fallback. That ranking misleads. A strong Ausbildung in a field with skilled shortages can lead to Meister or Techniker routes; a dual study place with a weak company partner can leave you exhausted and under-mentored.
Ask three questions before you chase application portals. First: do your current grades and subject strengths match the Hochschule entry rules for the programmes you like? Second: are you ready for employment duties alongside lectures — early shifts, project deadlines, and limited holiday flexibility? Third: does the partner company train dual students regularly, or is this their first experiment?
Signals from the company side
During open days, listen for how many dual students they currently employ and who supervises study projects. Vague answers about “learning by doing” without named mentors are a caution. Ask how theory phases are scheduled and whether exam weeks are protected.
When Ausbildung is the clearer fit
If you want faster entry into skilled work, prefer hands-on craft or commercial practice, or need a route that does not depend on Numerus Clausus thresholds, Ausbildung remains the more direct path. You can still study later. The reverse — quitting dual study mid-contract — is harder.
Write both options down with concrete programme names, not slogans. The comparison itself is often the decision.
